Luckier than thou

You know what they say. Sometimes it takes a great disaster to happen in your life before you realise how fragile life can be or who will be there for you when it really matters. You know like Betty in Ugly Betty—every time some shit happens to her in the series, her father, nephew and sister will always get together and get her back. And then there are the housewives from desperate housewives—they stick together through thin and thick. Yes, it is undeniable that their relationship is not perfect. Twisted and dark at times, but in times of need, none of the housewives found themselves to be alone and uncared for. Julius Caesar got to find out his true friends, though he found out a tad too late. My point is: you won’t know who your true friends are unless you get hit by the worst disaster in your life. Like a suspected appendicitis!

For those of you who are not really sure what had happened, here is my very own account of my journey to realising how lucky I am.

19th August 2013, we were celebrating JY’s birthday. There were 8 of us altogether; chatting, eating and having dinner, first at Al-Ameen at Bukit Timah Road and then dessert at Nook’s—this DIY pancake store.

this is my artistic work; I designed a flower-shaped pancake. Don’t judge!

This is the bf’s design of “a cat on a hot tin roof” pancake. If you don’t get the context of that joke, it’s okay. Hint: Paul Newman. Tennessee Williams.

Anyway, that’s not important. Let me get back to narrating my story. The next day, I felt lousy the whole day. I wasn’t sure if it was from the food that I had the day before or something else. Nausea, headache, diarrhoea—the worst combo ever; could be the perfect torture for a POW. I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t drink. I couldn’t sleep. I practically couldn’t do anything. I remembered going to class and telling my students,” If I were to faint, please call 995”. Mariah Carey said the same thing too before she had to be rushed to the hospital due to complications from exhaustion and dehydration. It was a diva recollection moment! All I know at that point of time was that I was very, very dehydrated as I was not able to drink anything without feeling the need to puke.

So after my class at Bukit Panjang Government High, I decided to get myself checked at a clini near the bf’s place. The doctor ran some test, and concluded that I might have appendicitis. When I first heard the word, I didn’t even know how to pronounce the damn thing. I saw the doctor furiously inscribing something on a piece of paper, folded it into an envelope and told me to check myself into the nearest hospital—Changi General Hospital, intimately known as CGH. He said that it is imperative that I check myself into the hospital right that very instance; if my appendix were to burst before I get to the hospital, I could possibly die.

I took the first cab that arrived with the bf and checked myself into the hospital. Got myself attached to a drip, and I had to be on the damn drip for about two hours. And then I was warded. The bf waited till 2am, just to be sure that I am safely warded into the hospital. Isn’t he sweet?

Let me fast forward that to the day after. The test results arrived. I don’t have appendicitis, just a very bad food poisoning… God knows from where. But I am not eating at Nooks ever.

The whole point of me telling this story is that, I realised after this incident, how lucky I am. Text messages and calls came in non-stop after I posted my picture on instagram.

People say you should consider yourself lucky if you had a handful of people who cares for you. I’ve got three handfuls and more. I am luckier than what people say.
